KINGS é um projecto visual e documental desenvolvido em Lisboa e no Porto, constituindo a segunda parte de um trabalho artístico mais alargado intitulado Queens, Kings & Queers. Com o apoio da República Portuguesa – DGARTES, o projecto evoluiu para um livro que continua a explorar a performance e a identidade de género através do olhar sobre a cultura drag em Portugal.
Enquanto as Drag Queens têm sido, ao longo dos anos, o rosto mais visível do universo drag, KINGS desloca o foco para os Drag Kings — mulheres, homens trans e pessoas não binárias que performam personagens masculinas — uma vertente ainda largamente invisível e sub-representada na cena drag portuguesa. Remontando a tradição da personificação masculina à Dinastia Tang (618–907), na Ópera Chinesa, KINGS insere estes artistas contemporâneos numa história mais ampla de jogo e resistência de género.
Em Portugal, os Drag Kings continuam a ser uma presença de nicho, apresentando performances politicamente carregadas que desafiam a masculinidade tóxica, os papéis de género e o binarismo. Os seus actos revelam múltiplas camadas de sexismo e desigualdade, afirmando, ao mesmo tempo, a necessidade de visibilidade e representação.
Em colaboração com os colectivos Kings of Kiteria e Queer as Fuck, e com a participação de artistas como Joaquim Fónix, Márcio de Gaya, Orlando the Drag King, PatPat, Só Carlos e Xicão, KINGS assume-se como um gesto de resistência e de celebração — um espaço onde estes performers podem, finalmente, ser vistos e sentir-se vistos.

KINGS is a visual and documentary project developed in Lisbon and Porto as the second part of the broader artistic work Queens, Kings & Queers. Supported by the Portuguese Republic – DGARTES, the project has evolved into a photobook that continues to explore gender performance and identity through the lens of drag culture in Portugal.
While Drag Queens have long been the public face of drag, KINGS shifts the focus toward Drag Kings — women, trans men and non-binary performers embodying male personas — a still largely invisible and underrepresented part of the Portuguese drag scene. Tracing the lineage of male impersonation back to the Tang Dynasty (618–907) in Chinese Opera, KINGS situates these contemporary artists within a broader history of gender play and resistance.
In Portugal, Drag Kings remain a niche presence, performing politically charged acts that challenge toxic masculinity, gender roles, and binary norms. Their performances reveal multiple layers of sexism and social inequality, while affirming the need for visibility and representation.
Through collaboration with the collectives Kings of Kiteria and Queer as Fuck, and featuring artists such as A. M. Dickless, Joaquim Fónix, Márcio de Gaya, Orlando the Drag King, PatPat, Só Carlos, The Vulnerable King and Xicão, KINGS stands as both an act of resistance and a celebration — a space where these performers can finally be seen, and felt seen.
